Gait Cycle
A correct gait pattern is essential for a healthy body and spine. According to Dr. Mark Charrette, D.C., "the stance phase, which comprises 60% of the gait cycle, begins when the heel strikes the ground. The force is equal to 2.5X the body's weight when walking and 3.5X when running. That's like a 160-pound person being hit in the head by 80 pounds with each step! The typical adult takes at least 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day; some take as many as 14,000. Repetitive shockwaves start at heel strike cause ligaments that support the foot's arches to stretch and cause various musculoskeletal symptoms in the lower extremity and spine to develop."
